Larger than the Long-tailed Cormorant and with a noticeable shorter tail. Usually occurs in larger numbers, commonly along the shore but roosts in trees. Has a strongly hook-tipped bill. The eyes are emerald and the lores are orange in males and scarlet in females. Breeding bird is glossy black with cheeks, throat and upper breast white, and often a distinctive white patch on the sides of the rump. Immature is brownish and whitish below. Found on lakes, dams and rivers.
